Four Key Takeaways from the SIEW Energy Insights Sessions

SIEW Day Two’s agenda in the afternoon was dominated by SIEW Energy Insight Sessions filled with insightful deliberations on key energy priorities of the day.
During the Atlantic Council session, panellists and guests examined the impact that aggressive decarbonisation policies and the transformation of the fuels market will have on global oil demand and geopolitical relations.
In the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) session, attendees discussed the shared relationship between hydrogen and energy and how it is leading the way to power energy production without any direct emissions of pollutants or greenhouse gases.
Another session held by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) looked into Energy Innovation and its role in securing Japan’s G20 Priorities.
The King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Centre (KAPSARC) also held a session studying the implications of energy transitions and disruptive customer-centric models.

Energy Transformation: Highlights from SIEW Energy Insights

As part of SIEW Energy Insights this afternoon, valuable insights and innovative ideas for governments and the energy community were shared.
DNV GL launched their Energy Transition Outlook 2019 report, featuring perspectives on the rapid pace of energy transition and renewables integration.
The International Energy Agency spoke about four key opportunities for scaling up hydrogen, and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry gave some insight into the recent G20 summit.
Wrapping up the session was King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Centre (KAPSARC), which proposed disruptive customer-centric models such as the creation of an energy insurance market.

Thriving in a Disrupted Energy Landscape — Continued Collaboration and Innovation is Key

Mr. Ngiam Shih Chun, Chief Executive of the Energy Market Authority (EMA), delivered his Opening Remarks this afternoon at the SIEW Energy Insights session.
During his remarks, Mr. Ngiam talked about the ongoing transformations that are changing the way energy is stored, used and generated. These waves of change are caused by an increased demand for energy, greater electrification and a wider adoption of renewables.
Earlier in the day, the International Energy Agency noted in their 2019 Southeast Asia Energy Outlook that the application of energy technologies and innovation will be vital to unlocking the energy challenges in this region.
To this end, SIEW Energy Insights aims to take in a wider variety of perspectives on key energy issues.
In its third year, SIEW Energy Insights endeavours to feature energy outlooks and reports by distinguished international organisations from Singapore as well as from overseas.
These in-depth and topical energy reports will provide valuable insights and innovative ideas for governments and the energy community as they plan for a more sustainable future.
In an energy landscape dominated by disruptions to the status quo, such collaborations and shared innovations will bode well for the continued development and growth of the regional energy industry.
Southeast Asia Is Ready for Renewables Integration

At the Singapore-International Energy Agency (IEA) Forum this morning, much of the discussion revolved around the energy dynamics and challenges in Southeast Asia.
In his welcome remarks, Dr. Koh Poh Koon, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Trade and Industry, shared how Singapore’s cooperation with IEA has grown from strength to strength.
In his Keynote Address, H.E. Dr. Aladdin D. Rillo, Deputy Secretary General, ASEAN, highlighted how energy connectivity could address challenges such as wider access to the energy market.
Opportunities and Challenges abound in a Future Powered by Renewables

As the costs of variable renewables such as solar PV and wind have fallen considerably in recent years, it presents countries in Southeast Asia with a prime opportunity to scale up their deployment plans.
Doing so will allow countries to diversify their power mixes, decrease energy imports and reduce greenhouse gas emissions – all at the same time.
However, it also means that policymakers in the region will be faced with the challenge of integrating these variable renewables into existing power systems.

The Rise of Blockchain and Decline of Carbon for a New Energy Future

In his Opening Address at the Asia Clean Energy Summit (ACES), Senior Minister of State at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Dr. Koh Poh Koon, emphasised that the expansion of solar solutions will help to reduce Singapore's emission intensity by 2030.
Citing the National Water Agency’s recent move to adopt floating solar photovoltaic panels, which will reduce the emissions equivalent of 800 four-room HDB flats, Dr. Koh added that it was critical for Singapore to develop innovative solutions to enhance sustainable energy production.
Dr. Koh also toured the ACES exhibition area, where besides engaging with exhibitors, he also minted the first AirCarbon digital token. Dr. Koh also launched the AirCarbon Exchange – the world's first blockchain-based carbon-trading marketplace – which comes under the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation.
At the keynote address, Mr. Francesco La Camera, Director General for the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), also shared that the transformation to renewable energy will bring over half of the world’s jobs in renewables to Asia by the middle of this century. Echoing Mr. La Camera’s sentiments on energy transformation, Mr. Jon Moore, Chief Executive of BloombergNEF, noted that by the mid-century, renewables will make up two-thirds of the energy mix.
Dr. Sanjay Kuttan, Executive Director, Singapore Maritime Institute and Chairman of the Sustainable Infrastructure Committee, SEAS, and Mr. Damian Chan, Assistant Managing Director, Economic Development Board, Singapore, launched a carbon white paper aimed at complementing the push for decarbonisation. The paper also identifies key opportunities for Singapore to accelerate its decarbonisation efforts across the energy value and supply chain. Anchored on insights arising from an industry decarbonisation survey, this carbon white paper by SEAS addresses the sentiments about and potential of decarbonisation strategies in the industry.
Opening the Driving Clean Energy Transition in Asia track, Mr. Damian Chan noted the importance of Singapore in transiting towards becoming a regional hub for innovation and product development.
The track further engaged leading industry experts on a range of issues ranging from best practices in the renewable energy industry to the importance of decarbonisation, decentralisation and digitalisation.

Views from Singapore-IEA Forum: Empowering Southeast Asia’s Energy Transformation

Singapore’s Senior Minister of State at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Dr. Koh Poh Koon, noted in his Opening Speech that the energy landscape in Southeast Asia is undergoing a powerful transformation.
At a time when renewables are steadily gaining traction, growing concerns about climate change are making it even more important for the community to forge a more sustainable energy future.
Dr. Koh also reflected on the comment made yesterday by Singapore’s Trade and Industry Minister, Mr. Chan Chun Sing, about harnessing the “4 Switches” approach to write the next chapter of Singapore’s energy story.
He added that energy efficiency will continue to play a critical role as temperatures in the region rise along with a greater demand for cooling. At the end of his speech, Dr. Koh pointed out that greater cooperation holds the key to thriving in a disrupted energy landscape.
Shortly after Dr. Koh’s speech, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Economic Community, H.E. Dr. Aladdin D. Rillo, made his Opening Remarks. Dr. Rillo talked about the importance of energy security and efficiency in developing a sustainable energy future.
To that end, Dr. Rillo also highlighted that better energy connectivity can address challenges such as wider access to the energy market.

ADS Awards Ceremony: Recognising Excellence in the Downstream Sector

Besides being a part of wide-ranging discussions on key issues and agendas within the downstream sector, guests at the Asian Downstream Summit (ADS) also got to witness the ADS19 Awards Ceremony.
Singapore’s Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Trade and Industry, Dr. Koh Poh Koon, was also present to hand out prizes to winners. They are:
PETRONAS, which received the Best Digital Transformation Programme award;
Hexagon PPM, which was recognised for their Innovations in the Oil & Gas using Digital Technology; and
Edison Tan from Shell Singapore, who received the Young Engineer award.

The Three D’s of Emerging Global Gas Trends

In his Opening Address at the Gas Asia Summit (GAS 2019), Mr. Kng Meng Hwee, Deputy Chief Executive of the Energy Market Authority (EMA), touched on “Three D’s” of emerging trends - Decarbonisation, Decentralisation and Digitalisation – and their impact on the global gas sector.
First, looking into the future, cleaner energy will start to dominate the energy landscape with a sustained global effort to pivot towards the use of decarbonised energy.
Next, with the advent of smart grids, distributed generation and energy management systems, we already are starting to see changes in the way we generate and use energy, leading us to decentralisation.
The final trend that is sending ripples through the global gas landscape is digitalisation, particularly in the increased use of digital devices. The global digital transformation is fast becoming an enabler for innovation, boosting efficiencies and improving uptime across the entire gas value chain. However, even with this progress, we are still on the cusp of even more dramatic transformations to come.
Following Mr. Kng’s Opening Remarks, fellow keynote speakers like Masato Sasaki, Director of Oil and Gas, Agency for Natural Gas and Energy, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) took to the stage to give guests and attendees an in-depth look into the latest developments in the LNG industry in Japan.
Another speaker, Mr. Ling Xiao, Vice President of PetroChina, spoke about the past, present and future of China’s LNG sector.

Singapore Ramps Up Sustainable Energy Production with Floating Solar

Day Two of SIEW got underway with the Asia Clean Energy Summit, where Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Trade and Industry, Dr. Koh Poh Koon, spoke about Singapore’s continued commitment to meeting the country’s climate change goals.
Despite Singapore’s limited access to alternative clean energy options, Dr. Koh reiterated Singapore’s pledge to reduce emissions intensity by 36 per cent by 2030.
To that end, Dr. Koh also made two key points in his speech:
First, he announced that two 1.5 megawatt peak (MWp) floating solar PV projects at Bedok and Lower Seletar reservoirs will be deployed by BBR Greentech Pte Ltd. Both solar PV systems are expected to be operational by mid-2020.
Dr. Koh also added that TES, the world’s largest e-waste recycler, will open a new battery recycling facility in Singapore. This facility will set the stage for more environmentally-friendly closed-loop recycling processing in the country.
