Views from SIEW Thinktank Roundtables D, E and F: Navigating the Road to Renewables

The next round of the SIEW Thinktank Roundtables continues, with experts from the energy industry sharing their insights on pertinent topics.
Organised by Agora Energiewende, panellists shared how renewables such as wind and solar power are playing an increasingly important role in power systems globally. But at the same time, wind power and PV are variable and weather-dependent, subjected to forecasting errors and located often far away from areas of high demand. They also note that the transition to renewables will be a process and will not happen immediately.
In Roundtable E, experts focused on the role of oil & gas companies in the energy transition. Even as decarbonisation becomes a major issue, the need for constructing a comprehensive framework for the oil & gas industry to support a low-carbon future while ensuring the world has enough energy to meet its economic goals has yet to be realised.
For companies in the areas of significant oil and natural gas wealth, navigating the structural changes in the energy system will determine their ability to thrive in this changing landscape. Conducted by Atlantic Council, in this roundtable, stakeholders debated which of the numerous avenues to explore offered the best opportunities for success.
Experts from Roundtable F debated global energy transformation. This discussion was conducted by IRENA, who released a 2019 report focusing on long-term decarbonisation of the energy consuming sectors – Global Energy Transformation: A Roadmap to 2050.
As this roundtable, experts discussed the key technology solutions that will be needed to support the global energy transformation.
They also looked at the major challenges countries are facing to decarbonise the energy sector.

Digitalisation will be the Key to Enabling Energy Transformation

As demand for decarbonised energy grows on a global level, these changes are raising new questions and concerns about carbon capture and storage systems and renewable energy.
Now, there is a growing need to address concerns of generation intermittency, remoteness in relation to demand centres as well as various system cost implications.
In view of these concerns, digitalisation has been lauded as an instrumental source of support in ensuring grid stability and reliability. It is also playing a key role in identifying possible failures and optimising production.
Stakeholders in the IEEJ Roundtable discussions engaged in debated about digital technologies in addressing the challenges and enabling energy transformation.

Transforming the Transportation Sector through Methanol and LNG

Smart Cities — The Heart of Energy Transformation in ASEAN

Asian Downstream Summit: Examining the Leading Downstream Trends and Technologies of Tomorrow

This year’s Asian Downstream Summit (ADS) Exhibition is a great opportunity for guests and exhibitors to network and gain valuable insight into areas like petrochemicals, data analytics, automation and e-commerce for refined oil supplies.
The Exhibition is also filled with technical presentations, called TechTalks, featuring leading industry solution providers sharing their insights on the key energy concerns of the day.
Delegates will also get to learn and debate the latest trends and technologies in Downstream oil and gas with experts in the field.
Yesterday, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Trade and Industry, Dr. Koh Poh Koon, also graced the Exhibition yesterday to present awards to the three winners of the ADS Awards of Excellence. One recipient was PETRONAS Refinery and Petrochemical Corporation (PRPC) for the Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC), which won the award for Best Digital Transformation Program.
The other two awards for Innovations in Oil & Gas Technology and the Young Engineer Award went to Hexagon PPM and Edison Tan of Shell, Singapore, respectively.
The Exhibition, located at the Orchid Ballroom, Level 4 of the Sands Expo & Convention Centre, is open to delegates and participants of the Asian Downstream Summit.
Seen at SIEW: Highlights from the Asia Clean Energy Summit (ACES) Exhibition

The Roselle Simpor Ballroom at the Sands Expo & Convention Centre was a hive of activity on Day Three of SIEW, as numerous entrepreneurs and start-up owners took to the stage to present their business ideas in front of business coaches from the Asia Forum for Climate and Clean Energy Financing (AFCCEF).
This activity was organised as part of the larger Asia Clean Energy Summit, a partner event at SIEW 2019. AFCCEF is a regional investor forum organised annually by the Private Financing Advisory Network (PFAN), a global network of finance and energy experts focused on scaling up investment into clean energy.
PFAN also provides free business coaching and investment facilitation to these promising entrepreneurs, and then presents their investment-ready ideas to potential funders.
Besides the AFCCEF, guests also got the chance to meet up and interact with a select number of leading clean energy companies in Singapore at the “Passion Made Possible” group of booths.
This year’s Exhibition also features an innovation arena where a selection of the brightest and most promising budding entrepreneurs get to network with potential investors.
The Exhibition is still going on today at the Roselle Simpor Ballroom, Level 4 Sands Expo & Convention Centre.

Views from SIEW Thinktank Roundtables A, B and C: Outlining the path to a Promising Global Energy Future

The SIEW Thinktank Roundtables began today with several insightful sessions involving experts from a wide range of sectors within the energy landscape.
In Roundtable A, industry stakeholders debated the role smart cities play in empowering energy transformation in the ASEAN region.
Organised by the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), panellists noted that while these countries are taking steps to make the pivot to cleaner energy sources, many still find themselves being confronted by challenges such as financial constraints. They also have to strike a balance between their country’s commitment to lowering its carbon footprint and growing domestic energy demands.
In another session, Roundtable B – conducted by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and Institute for the Analysis of Global Security (IAGS) – the impact of energy transformation on transportation came into focus.;
In view of an increasingly carbon-constrained energy future, the idea of using methanol as a fuel for passenger cars was raised as a possible alternative.
That said, the use of methanol will likely raise new questions for the community to consider. For one, action must be taken to address the cost of satisfying the infrastructure needs resulting from this pivot to methanol.
Panellists and attendees at Roundtable C deliberated the impact of digitalisation, which is shaping up to be an enabler for greater transformation in the energy landscape.
Conducted by the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ), the Thinktank discussion delved into addressing concerns related to technologies such as machine learning and data, and how they are transforming the delivery and usage of energy

SIEW 2019 — Empowered by Green Energy

If you’ve visited SIEW over the last two days, you may have chanced upon this signage shown above.
It's there to inform visitors that this year’s SIEW is completely powered by green energy. This was achieved through the purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) issued by SP Group.
RECs are designed to track the consumption of electricity generated from renewable energy sources. It also allows companies to trade their issued RECs with other organisations who wish to support renewable energy.
The electricity consumed at SIEW this year is also matched with an equivalent amount of green energy produced.
As Singapore takes steps to increase its solar penetration to 350MWp by 2020 and to reach its target of at least 2GWp by 2030, RECs are steadily being recognised as a way to achieve these renewable energy targets.
These RECs can also double as a credible means for companies to report that their activities are being powered by renewable energy sources.
SP’s digital REC platform introduced in 2018 is built to link up buyers and sellers of RECs digitally to make it easier for them to seamlessly trade these certificates with each other.

Seen at SIEW: Forging New Partnerships at the GAS Exhibition

The Gas Asia Summit (GAS) and Exhibition is into its second day today with organisations from across the energy landscape participating to give attendees an opportunity to nurture deeper relationships with key stakeholders in the industry.
Besides meeting new business partners, the exhibition hall also includes a Technical Programme Theatre area where distinguished speakers provide an in-depth look into the latest developments within the Downstream and Integrated Upstream sectors.
Speakers such as Jean-Francois Gauthier, Vice President, Sales and Marketing at GHGSat Inc., covered topics like managing methane emissions when used in the energy production process.
Lux Research Inc.’s Senior Analyst, Yu Yuan-Sheng, also shared his thoughts on how the LNG industry should come together to find ways to accelerate digital transformation through open innovation
GAS 2019: Highlights from the Natural Gas and LNG Energy Summit

At SIEW partner events such as the Gas Asia Summit Conference & Exhibition 2019 (GAS) allow attendees to gain deeper insights and foster stronger partnerships within specific sectors of the larger energy landscape.
This year’s GAS summit saw over 350 delegates and more than 1,000 trade buyers from the region’s Natural Gas and LNG sectors in the region.
During the keynote sessions, speakers deliberated wide-ranging topics including energy landscape and forecasts for major LNG markets like Japan and China, and also examined new frontiers for the LNG sector in Asia.
