This roundtable session aims to explore the opportunities and challenges associated with nuclear energy in Asia's transition to a net zero future. The discussion will examine responsible and collaborative approaches that contribute to achieving regional energy security, economic growth, and environmental sustainability.

The session will convene stakeholders from across Asia to share perspectives on the latest advancements in nuclear energy technology and how the region could collaborate in terms of safety regulations and best practices. The discussion will include:

  • Evaluating the contributions of nuclear energy within the broader landscape of clean energy solutions, including its potential to address baseload power needs and grid stability.
  • Addressing the diverse perspectives on nuclear energy across the region, considering the varying energy needs, resource availability, and public perception in different countries.
  • Examining the advancements in nuclear technology, particularly Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), and their potential to overcome certain historical concerns related to safety and waste management.
  • Fostering regional collaboration and knowledge sharing on responsible nuclear development, including best practices for safety regulations, waste management, and technology transfer.

This panel will explore the role that nuclear energy could take in meeting Asia’s growing need for clean and reliable energy. It will also explore the latest advancements in nuclear technology, particularly Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). The discussion will also examine the economic and environmental benefits of these advancements.

Discussions could include:

  • Nuclear Energy's Role in Baseload Power and Grid Stability: Discussing how nuclear energy can contribute to a reliable and low-carbon energy mix.
  • Small Modular Reactors (SMRs): Explaining more about SMRs and how they could enable more diverse applications of nuclear energy, such as the supply of low-carbon process heat.
  • Waste Management and Decommissioning: Exploring advancements in nuclear waste management and decommissioning technologies for a more sustainable future.
  • The Role of Innovation in Addressing Historical Concerns: Highlighting how advancements in nuclear technology address concerns about safety, proliferation risks, and waste disposal.
  • Public and Private Sector Collaboration in R&D: Encouraging collaboration between research institutions and private companies to accelerate the development of advanced nuclear technologies.
