The United Arab Emirates (UAE) recently announced (10 January) its plan to reduce CO2 emissions by 70 percent, increase clean energy use by 50 percent and improve energy efficiency by 40 percent in the next three decades.
Currently, natural gas meets more than 90 percent of UAE’s energy needs. Under the UAE Energy Plan 2050, the aim is for a national energy mix led by renewables (44 percent) and followed by gas (38 percent), clean fossil (12 percent) and nuclear (6 percent). The policy is expected to result in more than Dh700 billion worth of savings.
This is the UAE’s first nationwide energy strategy reaching 2050. Previous national energy targets had aimed to generate 30 percent of power from clean sources by 2030.
