Winners of this year’s Platts Top 250 Global Energy Company Rankings™, at an awards dinner held in association with Singapore International Energy Week 2015 on Tuesday
Platts announced the Platts Top 250 Global Energy Company Rankings™, its annual financial performance roster, at an awards dinner held in association with Singapore International Energy Week 2015 on Tuesday.
While this year’s top 10 saw the big oil majors continue to dominate the rankings, there was a major shakeup in the traditional running order.
Collectively, the world’s 10 biggest energy companies posted combined earnings of $119.8 billion last year on revenues of $1.87 trillion, a significant slide of more than a third from the year-before totals. Exxon held on to its top spot for the eleventh consecutive year, again outpacing its peers with sector-leading earnings and returns. Chevron and Shell rounded up the top 3 spots, identical to last year’s rankings.
However, for the first time in the rankings’ 14 year history, three Chinese companies - CNOOC Limited, PetroChina Company Ltd and China Shenhua Energy - appeared in the Top 10 rankings. The ranks highlighted China’s increasing strength, not only as an energy production and demand centre but also as a leader in the world energy arena. For the first time in the 14-year history of the Top 250 Rankings, there was a new Asia leader with CNOOC Limited as Asia’s #1 energy company and #4 energy company globally.
Dr. Bo Bai, Managing Director of Warburg Pincus, opened the dinner with a keynote address focused on the evolution of investment in Asia Pacific’s energy sources. There has been a rapid rise of alternative sources to funding energy investments, including private equity, hedge funds and Asian industrial conglomerates, leading to an increase in the overall pool of available capital. He remains “cautiously optimistic” on the future of energy investing in China, India and Southeast Asia.
The awards dinner on Tuesday, attended by more than 300 energy executives from 31 companies, also saw Platts name Ms. Nishi Vasudeva, Chairman and Managing Director of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd, as Platts Top 250 Asia CEO of the Year. An independent panel of judges selected her from seven other finalists.
Financial data for the Platts Top 250 Global Energy Companies Rankings™ was provided by S&P Capital IQ, which is a division of McGraw Hill Financial.
