Singapore organisations scooped seven awards at the annual ASEAN Energy Awards presented yesterday evening at the 35th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) in Manila, Philippines.
Launched in 2000 by the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), the ASEAN Energy Awards is the region’s highest recognition of excellence and innovation for energy efficiency efforts in buildings.
Entries from Singapore won in four out of the five categories, emerging tops in the “Green Building” and “New and Existing Building” categories.
With the Singapore International Energy Week taking place between 23rd and 27th October 2017, the energy community can expect to hear and learn more in the coming months about the latest in innovative energy efficiency practices and solutions.
The Singapore winners of the ASEAN Energy Awards 2017 are:
Woh Hup Building
Award: Top winner for the Green Building (Small & Medium) Category
Raising the bar for: Requiring no artificial lighting for 55% of the building for 80% of the year by adopting double glazing, low-emissivity glass, low window-to-wall ratio and extensive external shading devices. Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, with a total capacity of 33.9 kWp, help meet about 9% of the building’s energy needs.

Award: Top winner for the Green Building (Large) Category
Raising the bar for: Replacing 2.5% of the annual total building energy consumption with energy generated by solar PV. Its chiller plant system operates at a high efficiency of 0.579kW/RT, with controls optimised through the use of variable speed drives for the pumps and cooling towers.
Ng Teng Fong General Hospital & Jurong Community Hospital
Award: Top winner for the New & Existing Category
Raising the bar for: Using a solar hot water system that replaces 100% of total hot water required for hospital usage, and highly energy efficient chillers that achieve 0.599kW/RT efficiency to provide air-conditioning to the building.
Westgate
Award: 2nd runner-up for the New & Existing Category
Raising the bar for: Equipping escalators and lifts with Variable Voltage Variable Frequency Drives and smart energy saving mode. Extensive use of energy-efficient LED lighting and T5 fluorescent lights, as well as motion sensors in the toilets and staircases, helps the building reduce energy consumption.
Six Battery Road
Award: 1st runner-up for the Retrofitted Category
Raising the bar for: Achieving a design system efficiency of 0.65kW/T through a highly efficient chiller that has an auto-tube cleaning system incorporated. Together with energy-efficient LED lighting and T5 fluorescent lights installed for office floors and motion sensors in the toilets and staircases, the building has achieved a 36 % reduction in energy consumption.
SwissĂ´tel Merchant Court
Award: 1st runner-up for the Retrofitted Category
Raising the bar for: Achieving more than 31% reduction in electricity consumption by using high-efficiency chillers, pumps, and cooling towers with variable speed drives – and changing all light fittings to LED.
The Integrated Building-Changi General Hospital
Award: 1st runner-up for the Tropical Building Category
Raising the bar for: Saving 4,432.5 MWh of energy per year was made possible through measures like generating renewable energy through the 35 kWp of solar PV panels installed on the rooftop, producing hot water for all shower facilities by recovering waste heat from the chiller system, natural lighting, among others.
