10 Singaporeans Receive Inaugural SkillsFuture Study Award for Power Sector

As part of the national movement to provide Singaporeans with opportunities to develop their fullest potential, the Energy Market Authority (EMA) today conferred 10 Singaporeans with the inaugural SkillsFuture Study Award for Power Sector.
The award, presented by Ms Low Yen Ling, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Trade and Industry and Ministry of Education, aims to support early to mid-career Singaporeans in the energy industry who aspire to deepen their power engineering skills.
Evolving Energy Industry Offers Growth and Meaning for Youth

Environmental sustainability emerged as the top energy priority for youths at the In Dialogue with Youth session at SIEW this morning. This was followed by economic competitiveness and energy security.

6 Youths Awarded Energy-Industry Scholarships at SIEW

Six engineering students have been awarded the Energy-Industry Scholarship (EIS). The scholarships, open to Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and Polytechnic students, are intended to nurture talent for the Power sector.

The Youth Energy Showcase

The exhibition, part of Youth@SIEW, features the research and projects of students from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), Nanyang Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), Singapore Polytechnic and Temasek Polytechnic.
Pop by the showcase to look at the innovative ideas from our youth – from a self-powered cooling system and solar-powered automated watering system for urban gardening, to an electric mobility vehicle and eco-car created for the 2018 edition of Shell Eco-Marathon Asia.

Youths this morning heard more about Singapore’s energy trilemma from Ms Sim Ann, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Trade and Industry & Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth.
Mr Samuel Tan, Chief Digital Officer, SP Group, and Ms Liu Xiao Wei, VP External Relation, Shell APAC, also enlightened youths on the prospects in the energy industry and the value of continuous learning in a dynamic sector.
Optimism for Renewables Raises Energy Security Concerns: IEF Chief

We cannot put all our eggs in one basket when it comes to energy security, said Dr Sun Xian Sheng, Secretary-General of the International Energy Forum (IEF), during the closing session of SIEW Energy Insights.
Dr Sun’s comment came after earlier sessions by DNV GL and the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy, which respectively discussed the outlook for renewables and Germany’s ongoing transition to a low-carbon energy system.
“Hopes for renewables are too high,” he said. “While this trend towards sustainable energy cannot be changed, there is a long transition period.” Read the full article
Asia Remains a Pivotal Engine for Nuclear New Builds: WNA

Asia continues to drive the growth of new nuclear capacity globally, according to the World Nuclear Association (WNA) Performance Report for Asia which was presented at SIEW Energy Insights.
In the last two years, new nuclear reactor start-ups globally totalled 10 gigawatt of capacity – double the average in the past 25 years. Of these, 5 out of 10 reactor start-ups were in China, and 8 out of 10 reactor start-ups were in Asia. There are 60 reactors currently under construction, and more than two-thirds are in Asia. Asia to Remain a Major Demand Centre for LNG: SMS Koh Poh Koon

While Asia’s demand growth of liquefied natural gas (LNG) remains healthy, it is likely to be overshadowed by significant supply growth in the next few years, said Dr. Koh Poh Koon, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Trade and Industry and Ministry of National Development.
This presents challenges and opportunities for market players. Long-term investment decisions have become more complicated, and depressed oil prices have dampened the push for gas-on-gas pricing indices, said Dr Koh.
In response to these trends, Singapore has put in place initiatives that will help the country stay nimble.
The Energy Market Authority (EMA) has formally issued Pavilion Gas and Shell Eastern Trading Limited with LNG import licences on 23 October 2017. The Government has also lifted the moratorium on Piped Natural Gas (PNG) import, to encourage greater competition among gas suppliers to offer secure and competitively priced supplies.
To further increase dynamism in our gas market, EMA has also formalised the spot LNG import framework. Through added infrastructure and the support of new business initiatives, Singapore is being developed as a gas hub.

Energy in Transition: Perspectives from Germany and Japan

In 2010, Germany embarked on a long-term transition towards a low-carbon, reliable and affordable energy system built on renewable energy, energy efficiency and energy demand management.

Renewables to Account for 85% of Electricity Production in 2050: DNV GL

Forecasting is always a tricky task.
“There are probably more jokes about forecasters than about lawyers,” quipped Mr Tony Wood, Energy Program Director of Grattan Institute, during the first session of SIEW Energy Insights.
When asked what sets DNV GL’s forecast of energy trends apart from the rest, Mr Ditlev Engel, CEO of DNV GL - Energy, explained that their forecast was based on objective dollars and cents, and not on “wishful thinking”. Read the full article

We also have an exhibition to showcase some outstanding student work.
Alongside this, SIEW looks to the industry – specifically on the downstream sectors at the Asian Downstream Summit (ADS) and on the future of gas at the Gas Asia Summit (GAS). Both summits open today.
