Session 1: DNV GL’s Energy Transition Outlook 2017 – Power & Renewables focus

15:10 – 16:00 Hrs

At a time of uncertainty in our energy infrastructure and systems, where many existing forecasts are characterized by wishful thinking, DNV GL’s Energy Transition Outlook provides an independent forecast of the energy future looking at global energy demand and supply through to 2050 distributed over 10 regions, including Southeast Asia. With a special focus on renewables, power and energy use, the report will highlight the key changes that will take place in the next five years and present the implications for the industry including the wind and solar sector, TSOs, DSOs, manufacturers, investors, cities and end users.

Session 2: In Focus – Energy Transition

16:00 – 16:40 Hrs

The German Government - a conservative coalition of  Christian Democrats (CDU) and Liberals (FEP) under Chancelor Angela Merkel - decided in 2010 on the mid- and longterm targets of the "Energiewende" ("Energy Transition"). These "revolutionary targets" (Angela Merkel) up to 2050 were based on a far reaching consensus of the German scenario community. At the same time the goverment announced to prolong the operation of the nuclear power plants against the massive opposition of the civil society and  a great share of energy experts. But after the Fukushima Daichi nuclear catastrophe (spring 2011) the Government turned around to phase out nuclear up to 2022 without changing the  targets of the "Energiewende". This historical background is important to understand why the integration of energy efficiency and renewables  is absolutely crucial for the German "Energiewende" heading for decarbonisation and at the same time for risk minimisation (nuclear phase out). The opportunities and still existing huge challenges to implement the "Energiewende" will be summarized in the presentation. It will be discussed how far the "Energiewende" is on track and what lessons can be learned for the energy transition in other countries.
