At the Singapore-US Forum, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) presented the latest standards to support the production, transport and usage of hydrogen.
The event concluded with the closing remarks from Aileen Nandi, Minister Counsellor for Commercial Affairs - ASEAN, US Commercial Service, US Embassy in Singapore. Ms Nandi outlined the need for strengthened collaboration across the value chain to drive the hydrogen economy.
Peter Marino, Principal, Strategy & Special Projects, ASME, highlighted the essential role of engineering standards in establishing a reliable policy and business environment for hydrogen development.
In light of the institutional challenges facing the hydrogen sector — including the need for effective financing mechanisms and a secure policy environment — Mr Marino outlined how technical standards serve as a form of “financing insurance”. By establishing clear guidelines and protocols, these standards mitigate risks associated with hydrogen projects, thereby helping to enhance investor confidence.
Overcoming the unique challenges of hydrogen
With its unique characteristics — such as the risk of hydrogen embrittlement in storage and transport equipment — the hydrogen sector requires robust safety measures. Without reliable safety protocols, projects may struggle to secure financing, which are critical components for their success.
Collaborative efforts to drive the hydrogen economy
The burgeoning hydrogen economy necessitates robust collaboration among industry, government, and academia on both technical and non-technical matters.
Minister Nandi noted that it is encouraging to see discussions on crucial topics. These include the commercialisation of hydrogen, financing options, and the development of hydrogen standards among companies and government entities.
While the hydrogen sector is still in its nascent stages, the ongoing dialogue among companies and government agencies signals a positive shift towards creating a safe and sustainable hydrogen economy. Minister Nandi cited the partnership between Singapore and the US as being pivotal to advancing hydrogen initiatives.
