SES Session 1: Net Zero Asia – Government Support Crucial

Government bolstering crucial for Asia's net-zero ambitions. Industry experts stress the need for regulatory backing in diversifying energy sources and accelerating sustainable transitions.

In this Net Zero Asia panel discussion, it was clear that national energy transition strategies and policies are wanted and needed for the road to net zero.

As the five government representatives and industry experts from Australia, Cambodia, China, Indonesia and Singapore delved deeper into their discussion, they identified critical strategies, how to close the gaps in the energy transition, and collaborations needed in the energy landscape that hold the key to a sustainable and cleaner global future.

The representatives from China and Indonesia found common ground in the need for national-level support in order to gain success.

Built-in support needed for diversification, acceleration

Speaking in Chinese, Jin Wei, Executive Vice President, State Grid Corporation of China highlighted the importance of promoting renewable energy development in Asian countries, enhancing renewable energy infrastructure and utilisation, and decarbonising the transport sector.

He talked about the need for diversified energy sources and energy storage systems to build a solid foundation for a sustainable energy supply.

He also discussed the imperative to accelerate the energy transition and expand power systems, mentioning innovative technologies like maritime wind power.

All these, he added, require government support, regulatory policies, and service guarantees.

Strong foundations needed for big goals

Ir. Jisman Parada Hutajulu – Director General of Electricity of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resource, Republic of Indonesia –discussed Indonesia's energy transition strategies, which include aiming for net zero emissions by 2060, discontinuing coal development after 2030, and promoting the use of gas as a transition energy.

These strategies also involve the adoption of renewables, geothermal energy, and decarbonisation of the transport, industrial, and domestic sectors.

Different countries, same priorities

Despite their differences in scale and regional contexts, these commonalities reflect the global trend towards cleaner and more sustainable energy practices and underscore the shared commitment of nations to combat climate change and promote a greener future.
