Youth@SIEW: Youths Tackle Real-World Energy Challenges with Winning Ideas

Creativity and youthful spark won the day as more than 110 student teams from 36 schools contributed winning ideas towards a more sustainable energy future. Minister of State for the Ministry of Trade and Industry & Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, Low Yen Ling,  lauded the teams during Youth@SIEW taking place on 28 October.

She noted that this was the highest number of participants since the Singapore Energy Grand Challenge (SEGC) (Youth) launched in 2020. The SEGC is held to inspire and encourage youths to co-create ideas using Minecraft: Education Edition.

Among the winning entries were hydrogen, electrified transportation, and Internet-of-Things (IOT) technologies to analyse energy usage trends. Teams comprising secondary and junior college students had to share what Singapore’s Energy Story meant to them in response to the following challenge:

“As Singapore transitions towards a carbon-free energy future, how can we reduce our carbon footprint by leveraging the Four Switches and managing energy demand to achieve a more sustainable Singapore by 2050?”

Shortlisted teams then proceeded on to the clinic sessions where they then incorporated Minecraft: Education Edition to develop and illustrate their final submissions in an immersive multi-player environment.

The winning teams were:

Junior Category comprising lower secondary students:

  • Champion: Team SUStain, Nanyang Girls’ High School
  • 1st runner-up: Team Soyingleryl from Raffles Girls’ School (Secondary)
  • 2nd runner-up: Team Fantastic 4 from Holy Innocents’ High School

Senior Category comprising upper secondary and junior college students:

  • Champion: Team WACUUMERS, Hwa Chong Institution
  • 1st runner-up: Team H2, Raffles Girls’ School (Secondary)
  • 2nd runner-up: Team SusTech, Dunman High School

Teams were also assessed based on relevance, creativity and presentation. Members of the public were invited to vote on one of the top three entries from each category which best expressed the team's idea of a more sustainable Singapore.

In the Junior category, Team SUStain from Nanyang Girls’ High School took the crown for its innovative take on hydrogen and electrified transportation to lower Singapore’s carbon emissions. In the Senior category, Team WACUUMERS from Hwa Chong Institution clinched the top spot for its comprehensive approach to managing energy demand and supply using IoT technologies and analysis.

Since the launch of the SEGC (Youth) in 2020, more than 1,000 students across 290 teams have participated in this annual event. Information for the next edition of the Singapore Energy Grand Challenge (Youth) will be shared in the first half of 2023.
