"To enable Singapore to achieve our energy aspirations, we need to ensure a constant pipeline of young Singaporeans with a keen interest in combating climate change to be part of our journey." This was the rallying call made during Youth@SIEW by Minister of State, Ministry of Trade and Industry & Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, Low Yen Ling.
To this end, Ms Low awarded four Singaporean engineering students with the Energy-Industry Scholarship (EIS) in an Award Ceremony during Youth@SIEW on 28 October
The dedicated scholarship for the energy industry sector is offered by Energy Market Authority (EMA) in partnership with industry partners.
The awardees Mohamed Arshath S/O Haja Sheik Allaudeen, Alex Neo Yi Jie, and Manfred Lee hail from Singapore Polytechnic. Muhammad A’rash bin Noor Effendi is from Ngee Ann Polytechnic. They will join their respective sponsoring organisations after completing studies and National Service conscriptions.
For Muhammad A’rash, a third-year Electrical Engineering student, the motivation to apply for the EIS came about when he learned it would grant him real-world experience in the clean energy sector. On his aspirations for sustainability, he said: “I hope to contribute to the fight against climate change by learning how to build solar energy systems as a renewable energy engineer.”
For second-year student Lee, he shared that "I hope to learn how to improve the efficiency of our power generation system and support Singapore's energy transition to reach net zero carbon emissions.”
Launched in 2014, the EIS highlights the commitment by EMA and industry to build a strong pipeline of talent that can accelerate the pace of our energy transition.
