The Biden Administration has made a pledge to support carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology deployment and renewable energy sources abroad. This pledge is part of the Administration’s broader climate agenda, including its commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Carbon management technologies and renewable energy sources can help address the climate change challenge by reducing greenhouse gas emissions domestically and internationally.
Although there are multiple players eager to be the first mover on carbon management and renewable energy technologies within the region, legal, regulatory, and financing challenges inhibit widescale deployment of these projects in ASEAN markets.
CCS and geothermal energy are two distinct technologies related to energy and environmental concerns, but they are not directly interconnected and address different aspects of energy and environmental challenges. Geothermal energy offers a renewable and low emission energy source, while CCS focuses on capturing and storing CO2 emissions from various industrial processes and power generation methods.
Benefits of U.S.-ASEAN collaboration to explore geologic storage of CO2 and geothermal, on U.S. experience in carbon management/geothermal, on the global need for carbon dioxide removal and renewable energy solutions, challenges, and opportunities.
