Aiming to build back stronger and more sustainable from the Covid-19 pandemic, energy supply concerns, commitment post COP26, or any crisis that may happen in the future, policymakers across the ASEAN region are laying out the support for the energy resiliency in the region by looking at each AMS's capabilities.

The importance of a resilient energy system can contribute to all elements of energy security, including diversification of energy sources, security of supply, and regional energy connectivity, through enabling adaptation to change conditions and recovery, restoration and rehabilitation from disruptions and emergencies.

Reflected in the BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN JOINT DECLARATION OF THE 39TH ASEAN MINISTERS ON ENERGY MEETING ON ENERGY SECURITY AND ENERGY TRANSITION, ASEAN is intensifying its efforts on long-term energy and climate policy and planning to increase the rate of energy efficiency and conservation, expand renewable energy sources, and deploy advanced, cleaner and low-carbon energy technologies towards low greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climate-resilient development.

Against this background, in line with “A Resilient and Sustainable Energy Future” as the theme for the 15th edition of the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) 2022 and building on the key findings from the 7th ASEAN Energy Outlook (launched at the 40th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting, 15 September 2022) on Assessing measures for energy resilience, ACE’s Roundtable will discuss the ASEAN energy community can ensure secure, diverse and resilient energy supply even as the world undergoes an energy transition. The discussion will include the efforts to achieve the aspirational target for increasing the component of renewable energy to 23% by 2025 in the ASEAN energy mix, including by increasing the share of RE in installed power capacity to 35% by 2025, reducing energy intensity by 32% in 2025 based on 2005 levels, and expand regional multilateral electricity trading, strengthen grid resilience and modernisation, and promote clean and renewable energy integration.

During panel discussions, the experts will also discuss the issue of energy security, fairness in selecting the energy supply technology and resources, and energy prices as high demand will cause mid and long-term problems while logistic issues due to Covid-19 will persist a short-term problem.
