A positive shift is being observed with more countries committing to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. While such pledges are welcoming news for a clean energy transition, much of these commitments lack detailed near term targets to achieve the goals. In Asia – and especially ASEAN – a historically heavy reliance on fossil fuels for economic development is proving to be a challenge to take clear steps towards the energy transition. While decarbonisation of fossil fuels is a potential solution, the high cost associated with low-carbon technologies proves to be an additional challenge for ASEAN. Japan, despite its reliance on fossil fuels, has been taking ambitious strides in its clean energy transition with its regulatory reforms and utilisation of low-carbon technologies. In this regard, this roundtable will feature insights from IEEJ Outlook 2021 and Japan’s Strategic Energy Plan.
