Coal has been one of the cheapest sources of energy in Asia, accounting for two-thirds of the world’s coal demand. However, with competition from renewables and other fuels, the future of coal in Asia’s energy mix appears to be under pressure. Gains in energy efficiency have also impacted demand for coal. At the same time, Asia remains the world’s largest LNG destination. Global gas demand continues to grow, but at a slower pace than expected in spite of current low prices and supply surplus. Natural gas is also perceived as a cleaner fossil fuel, especially following the Paris Agreement. Given the challenges of production costs, the demand outlook, and lowering carbon emissions, what are the roles of coal and LNG in Asia’s energy mix in the future? How will economic, energy security and environmental considerations shape Asia’s energy mix to meet growing demand for power?
Building on previous years’ discussions at SIEW, this 5th IEEJ Roundtable The Role of Coal and LNG in Asia’s Future Energy Mix: Defying the Odds? will provide an ideal platform for those keen to understand the recent developments in coal and LNG.
