The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is represented by ten Member States: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
In October 2015, ASEAN set an aspirational target of achieving 23% of its total primary energy supply from renewable energy by 2025, representing a significant increase from the 2015 level of around 10%. Realising this renewable energy target requires a significant increase in renewable energy deployment; therefore it is necessary to have a detailed understanding of the types of renewable energy technologies that are available in the region, their potential, and the subsequent costs and benefits of significantly accelerating deployment over the coming decade.
The International Renewable Energy Agency’s (IRENA) REmap programme assesses the deployment potential, costs and benefits of renewable technologies across the entire energy systems of countries. Over the course of 2016, IRENA and the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) -working in close collaboration with the ten ASEAN Member States and supported by the Renewable Energy Support Programme for ASEAN, a jointly implemented project by ACE and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) - conducted an in-depth study looking at renewable energy potential for the region. The study applies IRENA’s REmap analytical methodology and tools at a country level and focuses on identifying the key trends and technologies that will enable the region to meet its 23% renewable energy target by 2025.
This roundtable will provide a platform to discuss the joint report “Renewable Energy Outlook for ASEAN: A REmap Analysis” in more detail with experts from around the region. The roundtable will focus on discussing which sectors and technologies offer the potential for the region to meet its renewable energy goals, how regional cooperation and integration of energy markets can help to accelerated renewable energy uptake and what are some of the key challenges and solutions.
Some of the topics the roundtable will discuss include:
- How the region’s energy demand grows over the coming decade and how ASEAN Member States can accelerate renewable energy uptake
- Which technologies and sectors are key to realising the regions renewable energy potential
- The role of regional co-operation and how can countries promote better sharing of knowledge and best-practice
- What key solutions are available to help ASEAN reach its renewable energy targets
