Financing Asia’s Energy Infrastructure

Asian energy sector is the most intricate, demanding, frustrating and exciting market in the world. It is fraught with opportunities, challenges, barriers and inertia. Huge obstacles must be overcome if nations are to develop their resources and build the infrastructure necessary to maintain and expand local and regional economies in a sustainable, responsible manner.
Edison Electric Institute has developed the first of a series of annual casebooks that capture the thinking, perspective and outlook of Asia’s energy investment- and decision-makers. Each author has been asked to take a fresh look at their particular area of expertise and to present not only the barriers and opportunities but most importantly the actions and programs needed to move the markets forward.
Organized around the major issues confronting the Asian energy markets, including fuels, investment, environmental, market reforms and risk we have included commentary of the changing dynamics of the regional markets and some of the possibilities that are engenders, including the role of AIIB, independent power producers, impact of innovation, the emerging “new utility” business model and finally a CEO roundtable identifying the challenges and changes necessary from five countries with significant infrastructure needs and equally significant financing requirements.
EEI will develop this series of casebooks annually. During the years when the Asian Energy Financial and Investment Conference is undertaken (bi-annually commencing in 2017) the commentary and discussions at the conference will be incorporated into the casebook. The objective is to capture the scope and content of actions necessary to move forward, beyond the current and sometimes seemingly permanent obstacles.
