Closer Collaboration and Innovation Crucial for Building a More Connected and Sustainable Energy Future
Delivering the Singapore Energy Summit Keynote, H.E. Dr Kao Kim Hourn highlighted the role of partnership and technology innovations to drive sustainability and energy resilience in the ASEAN region.
H.E. Dr Kao also showcased the progress made in key regional initiatives, such as the ASEAN Power Grid.
The ASEAN Power Grid is crucial for advancing energy resilience, regional integration and the region’s transition towards a low carbon future.
A significant milestone was achieved with the completion of the first phase of the Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project, showcasing the feasibility and benefits of multilateral cross-border collaboration.
Pivotal role of partnerships
Extensive partnerships with dialogue partners, international organisations and financial institutions in ASEAN are key to mobilise investments, access technical expertise, and strengthen policy frameworks.
H.E. Dr Kao cited the recent progress made in the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) as a showcase for how these strategic partnerships can foster innovation and multilateral collaboration to drive the momentum for clean energy developments.
Phase II of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2021-2025 has made notable progress. The initiative has achieved 33.3 percent in installed renewable capacity, surpassing its target of 32 percent. ASEAN has further achieved a 24.5 percent reduction in energy intensity from 2005 levels, demonstrating the region’s commitment to optimise energy use.
Future developments poised to transform ASEAN’s energy landscape
Commencing in 2026, Phase III will be focused on expanding ASEAN’s energy infrastructure, enhance digitalisation and smart grids, advance renewable energy and the latest carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) technology developments.
H.E. Dr Kao said: “I believe that sustainable energy developments in ASEAN can make a meaningful difference in the lives of people. Let us build a brighter and more connected energy future for all.”
Key initiatives such as the ASEAN Power Grid are key to facilitate ASEAN’s decarbonisation efforts and boost energy resilience across the region.
The role of partnerships and technology innovation remains pivotal to further drive the clean energy momentum forward. Significant progress in regional initiatives such as the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) showcase the potential for collaborative efforts to drive sustainability and energy resilience – with future plans focusing on digitalisation, smart grids, and developing advanced clean energy technologies.
