The Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore, headed by Mr. Ng Wai Choong, Chief Executive, Energy Market Authority, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), headed by Ms. Misako Takahashi, Director, Economic Security Division, Economic Affairs Bureau, and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan, headed by Mr. Kazushige Tanaka, Director, Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, held the inaugural Singapore-Japan Energy Dialogue at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, on 3 April 2017.
Building on the strong energy cooperation between Singapore and Japan through various regional and bilateral initiatives, the dialogue marks a significant milestone in Singapore’s bilateral cooperation with Japan. The inaugural session saw in-depth discussions on energy issues of mutual interest.
On regional gas developments, both sides discussed the latest developments in the gas industry, including the establishment of a regional gas trading and pricing hub, as well as LNG bunkering solutions. Both sides emphasised the importance of creating transparent, competitive and liquid gas markets, and expressed interest in exploring collaboration in these areas.
On liberalisation of gas and electricity markets, discussions included sharing of experiences and best practices. Both sides discussed the possibility of knowledge-sharing platforms on energy market liberalisation.
On cooperation at multilateral fora, both sides discussed global and regional energy issues and agreed to strengthen collaboration in areas of mutual interest at regional and international fora such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Plus Three, the East Asia Summit (EAS), the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), G20, the International Energy Agency (IEA) and International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
